Would it surprise anyone that Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch became the fastest-selling title on the new hybrid console? It definitely shouldn’t.
Nintendo has announced the latest Mario game has become not only the fastest-selling title on the Switch, but the fastest-selling game in the entire history of the Mario series, selling more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. alone. Super Mario Odyssey has surpassed the U.S.’s previous fastest-selling Mario title: New Super Mario Bros. Wii from 2009.
The latest Nintendo Switch title has accrued a Metacritic average score of 97, with 43 perfect scores (including our own). Odyssey is tied with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the highest rated games on the site over the last three years on any console.
“The public continues to respond positively to Mario’s latest adventure,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and COO in a press release. “We’re also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers.”
Nintendo announced during its quarterly earnings report that more than 4 million units of the Switch sold around the world through the end of October, with 2.6 million sold in the U.S.. The company plans to increase production of the Switch during the holiday season and sell 14 million units (globally) by March 2018.
The sales numbers for Super Mario Odyssey will likely increase as we get through the holiday season, especially with the special bundle that is available now.
Super Mario Odyssey is available now for Nintendo Switch.
