For a lot of hardcore video gamers, the mobile platform is often something that should be avoided. But that doesn't mean it has no value. Many titles have gained popularity on Android and iOS. Take-Two Interactive seems to be taking it a step further by acquiring Zynga in a deal valued at $12.7 billion.
Just a quick review, Take-Two’s games include Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, and NBA 2K. Zynga meanwhile is known for Farmville, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, CSR Racing, and Words with Friends.
With this deal, Take-Two can now position itself in the fastest-growing segment in the industry - mobile gaming. However, this can be good news or bad news to fans of Take-Two titles, depending on their stance on mobile gaming. That's because it's clear that the company is planning to develop mobile versions of their iconic franchises.
In addition, by having Zynga’s portfolio of games added to its own, Take-Two gets that additional revenue stream.
In a statement, Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that this deal is going to put them in a leadership position in mobile gaming. He added that it brings together some of the best franchises on PC and console with a history of creativity and innovation. Meanwhile, Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau said that the agreement allows them to move forward with their mission of bringing the world together with games.
Exciting as it is to think of a mobile version for GTA or even Borderlands, that’s probably going to be a bit farther in the future. It would be advantageous to release new games and see how the market and the fans react to them. There’s also the possibility of having Take-Two games but in the style of Zynga.
Still, it is thrilling to be able to play GTA Online on mobile. If not, then maybe we’ll just settle for a Red Dead Redemption crossover with Farmville.
What about you? Is this a good move for Take-Two?
