Strong third-party support is one of the many selling points for the Nintendo Switch, but a new interview with the Capcom CEO has Nintendo fans concerned that the company will stop supporting the new console if its latest title doesn’t sell.
In an interview with Japanese outlet Toyo Kezai, Capcom CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto spoke on a number of points regarding the company and its latest releases but when he spoke about the Nintendo Switch, the internet began to buzz.
A thread on NeoGaf titled “Capcom thinking out Switch support, talks about Capcom’s future and IP revivals” had the community in a frenzy when a summary of what the Capcom CEO said about supporting the Switch and how Ultra Street Fighter II does on the system in May can affect that.
This led many to believe Capcom was hinging future support on sales of a 25-year-old port that costs $40.
One NeoGaf user on the thread said “Hahahahaha! Let's overcharge $40 for a 8-year-old game that we sold for $15 back then and we'll evaluate based on this.” Others asked if this was a joke or outright cursed Capcom.
However, it seems the OP of this thread mistranslated the interview, especially regarding Tsujimoto’s comments on the Nintendo Switch. The OP posted an update after some users pointed out the error.
The literal translation of the Switch portion of the interview goes as such: “As Capcom, we aim to bring games to all platforms, and continue our research. As for the Switch, in May we will release USF2 and we will plan our support while looking at the situation [of the platform].”
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is the first Capcom release on the Nintendo Switch (releasing May 26) and the CEO is basically saying they will evaluate its performance while giving it a quick plug during the interview. It’s essentially a “we will look into it” response when determining what titles come to the Nintendo Switch.
It’s highly unlikely that Capcom will cut off an entire section of gamers because of possible poor sales of a port when the company has a good rapport with Nintendo and gave Nintendo one of its highest selling titles of 2016 in Monster Hunter Generations.
And with the new Monster Hunter XX already out in Japan and reports that a Monster Hunter title will be coming to the Switch in 2018, fans will not want to jump to conclusions so quickly.
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers will release for Nintendo Switch on May 26.
