Uncharted 4 was the last game to feature our favorite treasure hunter Nathan Drake and developer Naughty Dog is sticking to that decision. However, more Uncharted games could come after The Lost Legacy.
In an interview with Eurogamer, The Lost Legacy writer and creative director Shaun Escayg spoke about the future of the Uncharted franchise and where it could go in the future.
When asked if The Lost Legacy serves as the final story in the Uncharted world, Escayg said there are still plenty of new stories that haven’t been told. “I wouldn't say it's the end. This thieving world is huge,” Escayg told Eurogamer. “There's so many characters. Even before we settled on this particular story we were exploring Sullivan, we were exploring Cutter, and pairing each other up, thinking what would be right, what would have conflict, growth, something new, something fresh. And Chloe was the one that kept jumping out.”
This exploration led Naughty Dog to consider just about anyone as the potential star of a new Uncharted game. “We did explore, I would say, almost every character in that world and we do have spines and storylines to explore with them,” said Escayg. “But this was the one [The Lost Legacy] we chose to settle on.”
What started as a DLC expansion to Uncharted 4, The Lost Legacy is now being sold as a full game. Escayg says this is because it offers a full Uncharted experience that fans will love.
“It's kind of the sum of all Uncharteds. It has fantastic set pieces, we've brought back some of the scale, the grandeur you saw in the trailer, giant archeological sites, the sense of wonder and adventure where you're not sure what's around the next corner,” said Escayg. “For me, Uncharted has the sense of 'oh shit, we're exploring someplace no one's ever been'. We've brought that back there.”
So when can we expect to hear more about Uncharted’s future? It sounds like Naughty Dog has a full schedule for the next few years. According to Escayg, the full Naughty Dog team is hard at work finishing up The Lost Legacy. After that comes The Last of Us 2. This means another potential Uncharted game won’t be coming for a long while.
If you wanted to know about the Uncharted movie, Escayg doesn’t have anything to share. “We have nothing to do with the movie or the rights or how it's being handled,” he said. “No point of reference really, no control there.”
