The world has finally been given its first look at Vampyr, the upcoming vampire-focused project from Dontnod Entertainment, and it looks like the next project from the Life is Strange team is about as different from Max and Chloe’s adventure as anyone could possibly imagine.
We still don’t know all that much about Vampyr. A new press release confirms the project is set in early 20th century Britain, during or shortly after the conclusion of World War I. Players will assume the role of Jonathan E. Reid, a “high-ranking military surgeon” who finds himself transformed into a vampire after returning home from the fighting. As is typically the case, the transformation has given Reid a handful of supernatural abilities, including the power of seduction. But there’s still no word on a central plot or the big bad evil that Reid will presumably struggle against during the Vampyr campaign.
One thing we do know is Reid’s struggle with his newfound blood lust will form a central component of Vampyr ‘s gameplay. According to Dontnod, every character in Vampyr can be fed upon; however, each of the townspeople encountered by Reid also has a unique impact on the game world. As such, players will need to think carefully about who they’re using to satiate Reid’s thirst, and take steps to ensure the town never becomes aware of the former surgeon’s vampirism.
Feeding is also how players will unlock new supernatural abilities for Vampyr’s protagonist. The studio isn’t talking about Reid’s abilities yet but it seems rational to assume the usual suspects – like increased strength and use of astral projection – will make appearances in Vampyr. The game will also feature a “deep crafting system” that encourages Reid to build tools and weapons (melee and ranged) using the loot and other materials recovered from his victims.
