Norman Reedus doesn’t like Carl’s upcoming death in The Walking Dead either. It’s going to be a rough second half for The Walking Dead Season 8.
Reedus recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the overall losses in The Walking Dead. There are only four characters from Season 1 left on the show: Carol, Rick, Carl and Daryl. The dead original cast characters include Rick’s wife Lori, his best friend Shane, Daryl’s brother Merle, Dayle, Carol’s daughter Sophia, Andrea and her sister Amy.
However, the most shocking death of all the earliest characters was definitely Glenn. His demise led Reedus to really think about how the show gives these characters a send-off.
"The people that started this show, to me, are the heart of the show. When you lose those key members, it's such a big blow to the show, and to the fans, and to us that are there," Reedus told EW . "Who's left? There's only a few of us left out of all those people. If you wanted to turn it into a totally different show, you get rid of those people. But if you want to hold on to what made the show special, you've got to be very careful what you do with those people."
Don’t take that as Reedus confirming Carl’s alleged death. Remember the Glenn dumpster fakeout? That could happen again, though it is pretty unlikely he’ll survive a walker bite to the chest. Carl would need some strong antibiotics to fight an infection and we doubt Rick’s crew would find enough medicine in time. Negan torched their homes in retaliation after Rick’s crew attacked the Sanctuary.
Even if Carl dies, his death won’t be in vain. Rick still has Judith to think about, even if he knows he isn’t her father. Rick also has Michonne to rely on, and she’sstepped in several times to help Rick come back from darkness. Carl’s death won’t destroy Rick, not at first. We can see it clearly. Carl’s death will motivate Rick to continue fighting Negan. And when Rick finally wins, he’ll swing Lucille right at Negan’s head. Just as Rick is about to take that swing, Negan will bring up Carl’s death. Rick will drop Lucille and lock up Negan.
The Walking Dead Season 8 returns Feb. 25 on AMC.
