Season 3 episode 9 of How To Get Away With Murder revealed Wes Gibbons was the person under the sheet, having died in an explosion at Annalise Keating’s house. Annalise, the remainder of the Keating Five, Oliver, Bonnie and Meggy are distraught at the news. In a major cliffhanger, viewers won’t find out what happened to Wes until How To Get Away With Murder returns in the spring.
Through the first half of Season 3, viewers have been getting clues about who died in the fire at Annalise’s home. Show writers easily threw anyone suspecting his fate off track when Wes was shown at a police office in episode 7, bargaining for an immunity deal to give information about Annalise involving the death of his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Sutter. However, we see in the episode 9 that Wes leaves the police office after receiving a call from Annalise to go to her home. This is where he dies.
Nate Lahey, Annalise’s police detective ex-boyfriend, identifies Wes’ body at the coroner's office and later tells Annalise that Wes was already dead before the house exploded. Annalise was in prison, having been arrested in connection to the explosion at her home and Wes’ death.
So who killed Wes?
Currently, viewers know that both Nate and Wes’ girlfriend, Laurel were at Annalise’s home around the time of the explosion. Laurel was injured in the explosion, but Nate was not. Annalise, who cried and screamed when she discovered Wes was dead, told Nate she was not involved in his murder.
The second half of Season 3 is expected to center around solving the mystery around Wes’ death.
How To Get Away With Murder star Alfred Enoch, who plays Wes, told publications including Variety and TV Line that his character will be a part of the second half of Season 3, featured in flashbacks. However, his tenure on the show is over. Season 3 may not be the last time viewers see Enoch on the show. Actor, Tom Verica, who plays Sam Keating, Annalise’s husband, who was killed in Season 1, is still featured in flashbacks of more recent episodes.
How To Get Away With Murder returns Jan. 19 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
