Production for X-Men: The New Mutants will begin in May 2017, but a new development makes the announcement even more exciting. Writer Josh Boone has revealed he imagines New Mutants as another X-Men trilogy.
“After I made The Fault in Our Stars , we made Fox a comic book,” Boone revealed in an interview with Creative Screenwriting. “It walked them through a trilogy of New Mutant films that would build on each other.”
Boone teased the New Mutants team on Instagram back in May. So far, it looks like Warlock, Magik, Sunspot, Cannonball, Mirage and Wolfsbane will be the focus of the film. It’s sad we don’t see Karma, the team’s original leader and one of the five founding members. ( See and read more about each here.)
While Warlock and Magik weren’t part of the first New Mutants lineup, they both have story arcs that run deep. Magik is the sister of Colossus, a mainstay in the X-Men comics. Warlock is the son of Magus, the leader of the aggressive extraterrestrial race Technarchy.
Early reports had Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Wolfsbane, and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Magik. However, Fox disappointed fans when the rumors were shot down at the end of March. Charles Xavier and a younger Storm, played by Alexandra Shipp in X-Men: Apocalypse , are also attached to the film.
There’s currently no release date set for New Mutants , which will be executive produced by Simon Kinberg. With production six months out, stay tuned for casting announcements.
