Google promised Android 7.0 Nougat would be released during the summer, and a recent leak indicates the new operating system will be available starting Aug. 22. On Friday, tech blog Mobilesyrup shared a leaked document indicating the Canadian carrier Telus will begin rolling out Android Nougat to various smartphones on Monday.
Devices include the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Blackberry Priv. Typically, Google’s most recent Nexus smartphones are the first to receive new Android updates, so the leak seems valid in that sense.
Google revealed the name of its coming OS, previously referred to as Android N, in late June. The tech giant unveiled a Nougat themed lawn statue following a contest where fans voted for the Android N name. Since then, release details for the software have been scarce, outside of developer preview software releases.
The final developer’s preview for Android N hit Nexus devices July 18, so enthusiasts are certain the official release is coming soon. However, Google has yet to comment on rollout plans.
The 2016 Nexus smartphones accompanying Android Nougat are also expected to debut soon. Rumors indicate HTC will manufacture both a high-end phablet and mid-range slate smartphone for Google. Leaks suggest at least one of the devices may resemble the HTC 10.
There is no word on when the smartphones, codenamed Marlin and Sailfish , will be available. However, we can be certain that it won’t be until after Sept. 6, when LG plans to launch the LG V20 . T h e c o m p a n y is already marketing the device as the first smartphone to run Android 7.0 Nougat. This means the LG V20 will be announced, and possibly also released for purchase, before Google’s Nexus devices.
