During the opening ceremony at BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard revealed that Diablo 4 will take inspiration from all past iterations in the franchise. Even more so, the studio said that the latest entry to its hit action role-playing game is simply a return to the franchise’s darker roots. It seems that the developers are looking to steer clear from complaints about 2012’s Diablo III, which seems to have lost a bit of the series’ popular elements.
In an interview, Diablo 4 lead systems designer Sean Murphy revealed some interesting details about the upcoming game and how it actually differs from its predecessor. For starters, Murphy said that they intentionally want the game to have darker effects. However, he clarified that the game’s dark nature is simply “for effect.” He said: “We use that for narrative. Because if you do something like that all over the place, it robs it of its power. That’s sort of been our temperature gauge for how we’re playing things out like that if that makes sense.”
Murphy explained that fans are going to see “lots of things” in Diablo 4. There are things that completely make it different from its predecessors. He is confident that the game’s aesthetics will please fans, particularly those who asked for “darker, Gothic, a little bit more real, grittier type of setting.”
On the system side of things, Murphy revealed that Diablo 4 will have much more customization options. The same thing can be said for the game’s player choice options, which, according to him, is pretty much similar to the skill point system. The new mechanics will give players the ability to rank up go-to skills. And as they rank up, players will start unlocking new components.
Basically, Diablo 4 will have a talent tree system, which will be the main difference between the game and its predecessors. So, even if your character has the same build as another, it will still be different based on the choices you move forward with. As such, your gameplay experience will be different, and more in line with how you really want to enjoy the game.
