In anticipation of Jump Festa in Tokyo this weekend, Square Enix has released a few new videos showcasing Dragon Quest XI.
The next title in the Dragon Quest series is scheduled for a release in Japan next year, though there’s no word on a Western release yet. Dragon Quest XI will be a stand-alone title and the first Dragon Quest game to appear on a PlayStation platform since Dragon Quest VIII. You can check out Dragon Quest XI gameplay footage for the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo 3DS below:
The PlayStation 4 footage shows off Dragon Quest XI ’s open world with the protagonist galloping about on a horse. According to director Takeshi Uchikawa, “It is a vast map comparable to previous Dragon Quest titles. It won’t betray your expectations.”
As for the 3DS footage, you can play in either 3D or 2D, with the lower screen in a 2D retro-pixel style. According to the video, only the first part of Dragon Quest XI will have the 3D/2D dual option. Later in the game, you’ll be able to switch freely between the two.
You can also view Dragon Quest XI ’s opening movie below:
We meet our protagonists in this video, including our sixteen-year-old player character from the village of Ishi. We also meet his loyal ally Camus, whose unpolished attitude contrasts with his kindness and sense of duty.
The world itself is called “Rotozetasia,” with “Roto” being the Japanese name for “Erdrick,” the legendary recurring hero of Dragon Quest. You can also see the main character unveiling a very familiar sword, the Sword of Erdrick.
You can also unlock the Sword of Erdrick in free play mode after completing some challenges in story mode.
