When A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin laid out his endgame for the series to Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, they identified “three holy shit” moments, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The first happened in Game of Thrones Season 5, when Stannis Baratheon handed over his daughter Shireen to be sacrificed by Melisandre.
The second came in the most recent episode: Season 6, episode 5, “The Door,” when it was revealed that Bran destroyed Hodor’s life to save his own rich-kid skin.
The final major plot spoiler is “from the very end,” Benioff said.
With two seasons left in Game of Thrones, this seems like a suspiciously small number of holy shit moments. Perhaps others are more at the holy crap level?
And how will we know? When Drogon burns Tommen to death is that the holy shit moment? Or is this more about plot twists? Because Hodor’s origin counts as a twist, but Shireen burning to death is just shocking — but expected — Westerosi dirty politics.
Hopefully The Winds of Winter will release before we get to the final holy shit moment, even if there’s no chance GRRM will get A Dream of Spring out in time to save our spoiler-sensitive skins.
