God of War has become a household name in the gaming industry, thanks to the amazing revival done by Santa Monica Studio. Its soft reboot for the franchise, GOW (2018), won several awards and is considered one of the best PS4 games.
The Success of Soft Reboot and Upcoming Sequel
The soft reboot was just released on PC and has yet again received positive reviews from players. Unfortunately, it has some pending technical issues that need fixing soon. A full-fledged sequel, God of War Ragnarök, is currently in the works and will arrive this year on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Ragnarök will be the final game in the Norse Saga, so we don’t know if we will get more GOW -related content in the future. But what about the previous games?
Older God of War Games
There are six major God of War games released before the soft reboot. All of these are based on Greek mythology:
- God of War 1
- God of War 2
- God of War 3
- God of War: Chains of Olympus
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta
- God of War: Ascension
These titles are just waiting to be explored by new players or by returning fans.
Potential of the Greek Saga
With renewed interest in God of War IP and Ragnarok finishing the Norse arc, it is the perfect time to release a compilation of all six games. I am not expecting a remake of any of them, but some improvements to these games will go a long way.
Similar to Halo: Master Chief Collection on Xbox consoles and PC, the release of MCC has been a great success, especially on the PC platform.
The entire collection can be named God of War: The Greek Saga for PS4, PS5, and PC. We all know it will sell like hotcakes.
How to Play Older Games on PS4/5 and PC
Right now, playing older GOW games on PS4, PS5, and PC is a pain. A remaster of GOW 3 can be played on PS4 and PS5 via backward compatibility. But for the rest of the title, you will need to subscribe to PS Now. After that, you can stream these games to your PS4/5. We all know streaming a game isn’t as good as installing it locally.
PC users have it even worse as Sony has not officially released any game from the Greek Saga on PC. However, you can play GOW 1, 2, CoO, and GoS using a PS3 Emulator. GOW 3 and Ascension can also be played using the emulator, but you are guaranteed poor performance.
An average PC player doesn’t want to deal with emulators and ROMs, meaning that most will never experience the older games.
So what do you think? Have you played previous God of War games? Do you want all GOW games bundled for the new console and PC? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
