Today was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Hearthstone fans waiting for the Knights Of The Frozen Throne expansion. During HCT Shanghai, Game Director Ben Brode appeared to announce the new expansion and that the card reveals would start on July 24. Now that the day has arrived and the hype is at it’s highest point, what does Blizzard give us? A literal ticking time bomb called... Ticking Abomination.
Small-time streamer C4mlann had the honor of revealing this card on his stream early this morning. He has under 5,000 Twitter followers, a large departure from the usual social media giants like Reynad and Amaz, who usually reveal cards in the set. I was beyond let down when this was the only card I saw online, but my hope didn’t waver. It was still hours before 2 p.m. EDT, the usual time the folks at Blizzard get to work and start pushing out updates or news.
When 2 p.m. came and went, I started to get a little worried, along with the rest of the Hearthstone community. Currently 13,000 fans are throwing a hissy fit in the Hearthstone subreddit, upset that we didn’t get any awesome card reveals. “ Revealing just ONE rare card after almost 20 days since announcement just killed my hype ” is the second post on the sub’s front page, with over 1,000 upvotes in just a couple of hours.
Even though today was disappointing, I look to tomorrow with hope. Blizzard usually learns from their mistakes, choosing to make small tweaks to their release plan rather than piss off the entire fan community. Hearthstone fans have been dying to see the cards from the new expansion, there’s no need to prolong their pain anymore. Every card will be revealed in it’s time, the cards aren’t going to disappear.
Still, on the bright side, it looks like Brode is going to rap again.
Now, since I am a professional who is not salty at all, I’m still going to review this clown fiesta of a card:
Ticking Abomination- The first card reveal of the day was kind of a major letdown. There’s all this hype circulating around the new expansion and so many awesome zombie, Death Knight and bearshark cards still left to share, yet the first card we see is a fatso with gas. A 5/6 for four mana sounds amazing, until you see that it has a Deathrattle that deals five damage to all your minions. It’s like Dragonfire Potion for only your side of the board.
The artwork is gorgeous, I love how confused this zombie suicide bomber is. In the frozen tundra of the Frozen Throne, it’s good to see that Blizzard are still keeping the funny side of Hearthstone cards. Focusing on the serious side of Death Knights and the Lich King might be fun for World Of Warcraft fans looking just for a “What if?” scenario, but the rest of us expect more. My favorite Hearthstone cards are the ones that don’t take themselves too seriously, that are goofs and gags tied together with a fantasy bow. Cards like Pompous Thespian, Gadgetzan Jouster and Angry Chicken all add to the wacky world of Hearthstone, save the serious for Gwent .
