Twitter has a new tab on the micro-blogging platform that serves to help users find new accounts to follow. Called the Connect tab, the feature uses an algorithm that predicts who a user would like to follow. The algorithm refines itself based on user activity.
“To give you the best recommendations — which we’ll continue to refine over time — we look at who you already follow, Tweets you like, popular accounts in your local area, what’s happening in the world right now, and more,” wrote Twitter in a blog post. “We’ll also let you know exactly why we’re showing you each recommendation.”
The Connect tab, which is available for all iOS and Android users who update their app, also allows users to sync their account with their address book to find people in their network to follow. To use, simply update your app and click the blue icon on the upper left hand corner of a head with a plus sign. This takes you to the connect page where you can select “Find Friends” and “Sync Contact” to find users in your address book.
Alternatively, users can scroll down from the connect page to see suggested users. This section is broken down into several categories like “People You May Know,” “Based On Your Activity,” “Popular Near You,” “Accounts From Twitter” and “Because You Follow.”
Twitter has been rolling out many changes on its platform recently, including a button to share tweets in Direct Messages, introducing a non-chronological timeline and allowing users to send videos in Direct Messages.
