As found on the Japanese Zelda site, the file size for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been revealed for both the Nintendo Switch and the Wii U. Now that we know more about the Nintendo Switch as well, what will this mean for those who want to go digital-only in terms of games? Basically, it means you’ll be needing to buy external storage options fast.

According to Nintendo, Breath of the Wild will be 13.4GB on Switch and 13GB on Wii U. With the Switch only coming with 32GB of internal storage, this means downloading Breath of the Wild to your new console will take up over 40% of the hard drive. According to Gamereactor, even the physical versions of games don’t allow you to make save files on them, instead forcing you to use the internal memory for all save data. Yikes!

So what does this mean for the Nintendo Switch gamer? You’ll be wanting to look into external memory options as soon as possible. Thankfully, Nintendo has made this pretty simple, and is even looking ahead in terms of storage options.

To start, you don’t need any proprietary memory storage. This means any SD card or external hard drive should work just fine. The Switch has a microSD slot that will work with microSDXC cards, and will allow up to 2TB microSDXC cards, even though they aren’t even available to purchase yet. That’s pretty cool. Of course, any other sized microSD card will work as well.

Additionally, the Switch Dock has USB ports on it. These ports can be used with an external hard drive for additional storage. There are two USB 2.0 ports on the side of the dock and a USB 3.0 port on the back. According to Gamereactor, using an external drive with the USB ports will not be available as an option at launch. The reason for this is Nintendo realizes this isn’t a portable solution. The company will be taking time to come up with a better solution before allowing external drives.

So what do you think? Are you concerned with the lack of internal memory with the Switch? Will you be stocking up on microSD cards? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
