For those wondering just how long it will take to finish Mortal Kombat 11's story mode, wonder no more. In an interview with Game Reactor, Netherrealm Studios Story Director Dominic Cianciolo confirmed the could be as long as eight hours.
To put that into perspective, it took players an average of five hours to finish the story mode for Mortal Kombat X. While eight hours is less than average for many story-driven games, MK11 at its core is a fighting.
Cianciolo said in the same interview that while he can give an estimate on the length of the cinematics and everything else, he still "can't tell you exactly how long the story mode will be." In fact, the figures given are based on what a representative has reported. In a game having 25 characters, Cianciolo revealed he was careful when it came to the storyline as he wants every character to get their turn in the spotlight.
The story of MK11 follows from Mortal Kombat X, where Cassie Cage had already defeated Sinnok. A corrupted Raiden puts forwards plans to destroy all of Earthrealm's enemies in order to protect it. A women named Kronika tries to restore order and get rid of Raiden if necessary. Kronika wants to rewind time in order to restart everything, resulting in the time lines being merged and the present meeting the past. According to Cianciolo, this has allowed the developers “to really explore the characters in an interesting way, because when you have a character essentially confronting their past self as they were it allows you to learn more about them.”
A total of 25 characters will be available to play upon launch with a number of veterans returning, like Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, and Scorpion. A new character has been introduced: Geras. Geras is an underling of Kronika, and whose powers are based on sand and time.
Pre-orders of the game are already available with access to an online beta available at the end of the month. Official release is scheduled for April 23 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
