Mortal Shell, a Darks Souls-inspired action game from developer Cold Symmetry, is finally releasing on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in only two weeks. The announcement was made via an amazing trailer that encompasses the brutality and mysteriousness of medieval gothic fantasy. Check out the trailer below:
Cold Symmetry also released an open-beta for Mortal Shell a month ago, which allowed players to get the taste of the game and also assisted the developer with players providing important feedback.
The events in Mortal Shell take place in a breathtaking medieval region and the unfolding story is layered with gothic fantasy, a perfect welcome for a Soulsborne fan. My experience with Mortal Shell's open-beta was rather mixed. I liked certain aspects of the game, which include the world design, visuals, and sound design. However, I didn't care for Mortal Shell's combat mechanics, which felt a bit underwhelming. This could be due to the fact that I have been playing a lot of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which focus on fast-paced fights and parries. Regardless, I feel that the combat in Mortal Shell has great potential for improvement and we can hope to see some interesting changes in the final release.
The developer describes Mortal Shell as an "uncompromising Soulslike experience through a compact, single-player game." The game is expected to offer around 15-20 hours of content. Moreover, the feedback from the open beta has been quite positive.
The most intriguing part about Mortal Shell is the shell system. Shells are actually dead bodies laying around in the world that the character can inhabit. Different shells have different abilities that can be unlocked and upgraded. You will also have to read item descriptions to make certain items synergize with a specific shell.
Mortal Shell is releasing for PC, PS4 and Xbox One August 18 with a small price tag of $29.99. On PC, the game will launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive. The Steam version of Mortal Shell will arrive in 2021.
