Millions of Americans spend around $10 a month to subscribe to Netflix. Now, for the top one percent, there is another service that allows them to watch movies currently playing in theaters in the comfort of their homes. A company called Prima Cinema offers a $35,000 device that allows well-off users to rent theatrically released films for $500 (or $600 if they want 3D).
“Before Prima Cinema, only invited Hollywood insiders were able to view theatrically released films at home,” says the firm. “No longer. Prima Cinema is the first premium entertainment company that delivers Hollywood films directly to your private home theater.”
The player does not offer a streaming service. Instead, the newly released movie will download directly to the player to eliminate any chances of glitches. Content will be uploaded within a week of theatrical release, with some films becoming available before they hit the theaters.
The firm has implemented security measures as well. For example, the primary device is assigned to one individual with a registered fingerprint to ensure only one person can approve a purchase.
The idea behind this product is to provide wealthy clients an alternative to going to the theater.
“That circuit is still a private affair, run by the studios,” told Prima CEO Shawn Yeager to the New York Post. “We're the only company in the world that offers exactly the same experience to anyone who can afford it.”
The exclusive clientele includes celebrities, directors, producers, pro-athletes, sports franchise owners, high-net worth entrepreneurs, diplomats, and senior Wall Street and Silicon Valley executives.
According to Prima Cinema, 2015 saw tremendous growth.
“This has been our highest-grossing twelve months ever resulting in a breakout year for the company,' said Richard Jenkins, Head of Content at PRIMA Cinema, to Reuters. “'Our success is a result of working closely with all of our studio partners to bring the best quality films to our client's private home theaters on opening weekend. Our studio partners and clients are also excited that our new 4K movie player is coming out shortly.”
Food for thought the next time you gripe about a $15 movie ticket.
