The 88th annual Academy Awards featured Leonardo DiCaprio winning for Best Actor, host Chris Rock calling out the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the lack of diversity, and the new teaser trailer for season 4 of Orange is The New Black .
The 35-second teaser poked fun at the Oscars by making reference to “Hollywood types” and boring white people. Seen in the trailer were many familiar faces like Poussey (Samira Wiley), Black Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore), Piper (Taylor Schilling), Sophia (Laverne Cox), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Flaca (Jackie Cruz), and most surprisingly, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon).
In one of the final scenes of season 3, a former associate and Kubra hitman showed up at Litchfield and confronted Alex while she was alone in a shed, leaving her fate up in the air. Fans have been speculating that Alex will survive, since Prepon has been filming for the show.
Other scenes in the trailer for the Netflix original series show Poussey and Black Cindy chest-bumping, Piper talking about “talent, originality, and sense of humor,” Sophia continuing her time in solitary, and a SWAT team popping up. Amidst the light-hearted moments, brief scenes show that security is about to get tighter in Litchfield.
Changes in Litchfield come as no surprise, considering prison overcrowding is an ongoing theme for the new season.
"This season really drops in a totally different way," said Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, in an interview with Vogue. "The prison is becoming overpopulated. All the new inmates really add more tension, and believe me, it is tense."
Cox told E! News ' Ryan Seacrest on E!'s Live From the Red Carpet that season 4 will also tack criminal justice system issues.
"Our brilliant creator Jenji Kohan has this amazing vision," said Cox. "We just finished shooting season 4 and we're going deeper into the issues of these women and the criminal justice system and it's getting even more real if you can believe it."
A previous teaser from earlier this year showed Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne), suggesting that her character will no longer be confined in Maximum Security and will finally return. Additionally, fans see Taystee behind a desk. Whether she scores a desk job in prison or the scene was part of a flashback is yet to be determined. Brooks revealed in her interview with Vogue that her character will be evolving.
"We left off with Taystee being the mom, taking over this role that Vee was in," said Brooks in the interview. "We’re going to see how she deals with that."
Orange is The New Black season 4 releases on Netflix on June 17.
