Season 5 of ABC’s Once Upon a Time is coming to an end, and the most recent episode saw the triumphant return of Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and the tragic death of Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) after Hades (Greg Germann) tries to kill Regina with the Olympus Crystal.
“We discussed the way in which he was going to die, and Adam and Eddy’s reasoning for it,” said Maguire to TVLine, adding: “It’s nice that he got to go out in a way that he was throughout the series, as kind of a hero.”
Robin has been a fan favorite since he was revealed to be a love interest for Regina (Lana Parrilla).Considering the Evil Queen’s tragic love history thus far, Robin’s death is yet another obstacle to Regina’s happy ending.
“There's just a real fever for this and I think that a lot of people believed that Robin and Regina -- because of what had been written, were going to be -- maybe have a happy ending, and that hope would stay alive. But alas, it's not to be,” said Maguire to Access Hollywood.
With death never being permanent on the ABC fairytale drama, it is a valid question to ask if the heroes can save Regina’s true love. Several characters (including Hook) have made a return so one would imagine that, at some point, Robin would be able to come back. Death by Olympus Crystal appears to make his death seem like a permanent change to the show, but nothing is impossible in Storybrooke.
TVLine asked Maguire if he would return for a flashback. The actor said: “I don’t know…. I’ve been asked to go back to shows that I’ve been on before and I’ve never done it, because I tend to feel that once I’ve played a character, I’ve done that. But you never know. I never say never, but at the moment I’m looking forward to a new challenge and a new chapter. We’ll see!”
The Once Upon A Time Season 5 finale airs on Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
