Rag & Bone's collaboration with Star Wars and Lucasfilm proves geek fashion can be more than just a sweatshirt with a logo on it. Right in time for The Last Jedi premiere on Dec. 15, as well as the franchise’s 40th anniversary, the American fashion label helmed by Marcus Wainwright prepares to drop a number of Autumn/Winter pieces perfect for the modern Jedi.
Contrasting colorways and hidden details represent the balance between good and evil in the saga, depicting the two sides of the Force, the opposing factions of the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, or the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. In keeping with the Rag & Bone aesthetic, these items are rugged in quality and embody the elevated minimalism the brand represents. It’s fashion first, geek second.
“We wanted something that wouldn’t look out of place, so we had to be subtle,” Wainwright told Vogue. “We couldn’t just stamp Star Wars on the front.”
The earthy collection finds subtle ways to reference the franchise within the confines of Rag & Bone’s established identity. Ellis boots get a dash of red detail. The aesthetic of the Rebel base on Yavin 3 gets a modern upgrade into a quilted bomber with a ‘jump to lightspeed’ lining. The high top RB1 velcro-strapped sneakers get an orange sole, slim enough to avoid your average space sneaker cliche. Aviator pants have a refined cargo look for a space setting. The hooded echo jacket and matching pants are laced, reminiscent of the style on ice planet Hoth and Leia’s jumpsuit. The oversized ‘Hope’ mock-neck sweater is made for a cold, dry night in the desert.
“Every other space movie is set in the future,” Wainwright said. “Star Wars seems to be set in the past and it just feels like a completely believable parallel dimension as opposed to what the future could look like.”
Two silhouetted X-wing fighters on a T-shirt is as straightforward as it gets for this collaboration. 1138, a number commonly referenced in the franchise in honor of George Lucas’s first film, is stamped on various accessories. Look closely and you may find the rebel symbol attached to your sweater. It’s a safe bet the Aurebesh tee will go fast.
This is not your average branded entertainment collaboration. So where/when can you cop? The collection ranges from $95-$1295. The line will be released in batches in select Rag & Bone stores and www.rag-bone.com and select pieces will also be available on the newly relaunched ShopDisney.com site from Dec. 1, 2017.
