A new trailer for RPG Maker Fes, the first game from the series developed specifically for Nintendo 3DS, debuted during this week’s Nintendo Direct. There won’t be many surprises for longtime fans of the RPG Maker series. But some fans may be disappointed by the relatively limited feature set in the latest addition to the franchise.
This is the first time a portable version of RPG Maker has been released in the West, despite the fact RPG Maker has been getting handheld ports since the Game Boy Color era. The game builder’s feature set is underwhelming, lacking many tools -- like the ability to import textures or audio from other sources -- that helped make previous iterations so popular. But it’s a good start. And we can always hope desirable features, like the ability to continue working on a project that began its life on a PC, will show up in whatever comes after RPG Maker Fes . We’d probably even be willing to pay a few bucks to get some of those features as DLC.
There are plenty of details we still don’t know too. There’s no word on how big RPG Maker Fes projects can be. Example projects from the new trailer range in production time, from 30 minutes to five hours, but we’d be surprised if Fes can build anything comparable to commercial releases like To The Moon or Always Sometimes Monsters. On the plus side, RPG Maker Fes fans will be able to share their creations with the entire Nintendo 3DS community -- even those who don’t buy the software -- thanks to a free app ( RPG Maker Player ) that will be available on the eShop.
