Activision’s move forward with the Call of Duty series with this year’s entry, Modern Warfare, proved to be one of the best decisions they’ve had for the series in quite some time. It’s popular both with the crowd who wants a satisfying multiplayer experience, as well as the single-player crowd who often felt that they were left behind in the last couple of years as the series shifted towards a live service model that brings its publishers tons of cash.
Whichever crowd you find yourself in, it’s no secret that nostalgia plays a lot into this new entry, as the original Modern Warfare trilogy was considered the highlight of Call of Duty, for both its multiplayer offerings and single-player experiences. It makes a lot of sense, then, that this trend continues in the coming years, and if this next rumor proves to be true, it seems that Black Ops is the next series to get the nostalgia treatment.
As highlighted first by a YouTube insider by the name of TheLongSensation, it’s rumored that the Call of Duty entry for 2020 will be a new Black Ops game, and it will be called either Black Ops or Black Ops V. It would make sense if it’s the former if they’re really modeling the release after Modern Warfare’s return this year. Check out the tweet below to see more details about the rumored upcoming title.
According to the tweet, this iteration of Black Ops will be set during the Cold War, and will span t40+ years, including the Vietnam and Korean War. What’s also interesting and worth noting is that it is being described as grittier and more gruesome than Modern Warfare, which is proving to be a very realistic take on the series.
Of course, take all of this information with a grain of salt, but seeing as it was this same insider that leaked the correct name of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare before the official reveal, I would not be surprised if this holds true.
In any case, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 25, 2019.
