Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 7 at an Unpacked event in New York City Tuesday. The smartphone brings to the Galaxy Note line, many never before seen features. The Galaxy Note 7 is not only the first Note to feature a dual-edge display and be water resistant with an IP68 rating, it is also the first Samsung smartphone to feature an iris scanner.
While the Galaxy Note 7 includes a host of features, Samsung showcased some specific aspects of the device at its launch event. The Note 7 S-Pen has been upgraded with a sharper. 7mm point. In order to make the smartphone completely water resistant, Samsung also had to make the stylus water resistance. Users will be able to use both the handset and the S-Pen underwater.
Other S-Pen features a new oil brush point, which allows users to mix colors when using the setting. Users can press the side button to erase S-Pen text or drawings. The stylus also has accompanying apps including, Samsung Notes, a hub for all S-Pen features; Translator, which allows users to decipher single words in different languages by highlighting them with the S-Pen and GIF animator, which allows users to crop out second long animated images out of video, using the S-Pen.
The Galaxy Note 7 has also seen upgrades to it’s 12-megapixel lens, which include the dual-pixel technology first introduced on the Galaxy S7. The camera feature allows for sharper, more color accurate and better low-light photos. The smartphone can also capture and playback HDR (high-dynamic range) video. Samsung has partnered with Amazon to provide subscribers with HDR streaming.
Updates to Samsung’s TouchWiz UX include a design aimed at matching the Note 7’s external design. Users will find icons are now uniformly rounded and the device features wallpapers that move as the device is manipulated.
Other software features include Smart Switch, which allows users to transfer data and settings from an old device to a Galaxy Note 7. With Samsung Cloud, Note 7 users will get 15GB of cloud storage free.
To accompany the new iris scanner, Samsung has introduce a setting called Secure Folder. Similar to features on Samsung’s Knox security suite, users can keep apps and information secure with iris scanner verification. Samsung Pass is another biometrics connected feature, which allows users to access banking information by using the iris scanner to verify their identity. Samsung has partnered with Bank of America, Citibank, US Bank and other international institutions for this feature.
The Galaxy Note 7 features the largest battery of all the Note devices: 3,500mAh. Like the Galaxy S7, the device supports fast charging for wired and wireless charging. Samsung has introduced a USB Type-C port, which is known for being symmetrical in shape and for faster data transfer. However, Samsung will include a backwards compatible adapter free with the Galaxy Note 7.
Samsung also introduced a new Gear VR headset, which features a new black color scheme, wider lenses, USB Type-C and backwards compatibility with Galaxy smartphones up to the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will hit stores Aug. 19 and will be available for preorder Aug. 3. U.S carriers including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular will offer the device.
