Star Wars Battlefront 2 is in multiplayer beta across PS4, Xbox One and PC, and new players may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. If you’re hoping to compete at a decent level, here are five tips to help you hit the ground running.
1) Use Arcade Mode Wisely: Arcade Mode will be fully featured when the final game releases, but for the multiplayer beta, it’s an awesome place to get your feet wet. The AI is just plain stupid on lower difficulty levels, and that allows you to get a feel for the weapons, classes, Star Cards and attachments at your disposal. In fact, there’s even a hero mission to help you better control heroes like Darth Maul.
It’s no secret as to why DICE put Arcade Mode in the beta. If you’re new to Battlefront or just need a quick mechanical refresh, Arcade is the first place you should go.
2) Don’t Forget About Star Cards And Attachments: When you first boot the beta you’ll be introduced to the idea of Star Cards and attachments. In fact, you might get some crafting points or cards in your introductory loot crates. Be sure to equip them before or during battle.
Star Cards are additional rechargeable abilities tied to each class, and they can be unlocked by opening crates. As you level up in the beta, you’ll be granted the option to use up to three cards at once. Attachments are permanent parts that add improved fire rates, damage buffs and scope options to the weapons you like. They’re built with crafting points found in crates. Take a closer look at all of these systems at the beta’s Collection screen so you know what cards and upgrades are available to you.
3) Spend Your Battle Points: As you start to get better at Battlefront 2, you’ll accumulate Battle Points in large numbers. This currency is new to the sequel, and it’s used to unlock vehicles and heroes in battle. You earn Battle Points through kills, staying close to your teammates and, most importantly, playing to the objective. When you see a notification that says you have reinforcements available, take a look at the available selection and decide which perk you’d like to work towards.
Vehicles can be especially dynamic in combat. When flying around, be sure to look out for other ships and key troops on the ground. Enemies tied to critical objectives will be marked in red, so be sure to blow them up.
4) Always Check For Crates: When you’re in the thick of several matches in a row, it can be easy to forget to check the main menu for crates. The more you play the more crates you’ll get, and crates are hugely tied to progression. A single Star Card can work to your advantage in monumental ways, so waiting to unlock it doesn’t make sense.
You don’t even have to play exceptionally well to get free crates. In the beta there are daily rewards that appear no matter what. If you’re really hungry for unlocks, there’s always the option of buying more crates with credits earned in battle.
5) Play To Your Class: There’s a huge emphasis on classes in Battlefront 2, so that means you’re going to want to know how to use them correctly. There are four main classes available in the game. Here’s a little bit about each of them.
- Assault: If you’re a new player or into basic run-and-gun action, this is where you should start. It’s a fairly balanced class with some solid unique abilities.
- Heavy: This class is designed for those who prefer to hang back and lay down suppressive fire with serious artillery. The Sentry and Combat Shield abilities in particular are well worth using when they’re charged.
- Officer: Officer is basically the support class, and we would suggest it only for those experienced with shooters or the maps in play. In terms of abilities, Battle Command is super helpful. It gives a health buff to troops in your vicinity.
- Specialist: A Specialist is a sniper, and sniping is best suited for relatively high-level players. The best asset of this particular class is the Thermal Binoculars ability. It lets you see through walls to track your most troublesome targets.
Again, take advantage of the Arcade Mode to find out which class is most appropriate for the way you play. Try out each special ability and see if they complement or detract from the kind of action you prefer. It doesn’t hurt to get familiar with every class because you can switch between them on the fly. Especially in objective-based modes like Assault, certain stages of the battle may be more tuned to the advantages of a certain class. If you’re fighting for the throne room in Theed, for example, being a sniper won’t do you much good.
Those are our tips so use them wisely. May the Force be with you.
The Star Wars Battlefront 2 beta is planned to conclude Oct. 9 at 4 a.m. EDT. The full game comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 17.
