I might be the only one from my office right now not at E3, but I did manage to watch the EA press conference. After the ridiculous marching band, YouTuber camera flubs and a prison break, we got our first real look at the new Star Wars: Battlefront 2. The first (third?) game that relaunched the series was a major disappointment, full of incomplete gameplay experiences and overpriced DLC.

I’m trying not to get to hyped about what we saw in the trailer, but I find it difficult to restrain myself. I felt the same sense of childhood wonder and pixie dust over my eyes after seeing the first trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront back in 2014. We got to see the thunderous stomp of an AT-AT, knocking rebel soldiers into the air with ragdoll physics on par with Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. The battle on Hoth has always been one of my favorite moments in the Star Wars movies and to see it recreated in such gritty detail fulfilled the Yoda lunch box of my inner child. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, Stormtroopers that could actually aim and an updated, modernized version of one of the best franchises for the PlayStation 2 — how could anyone mess this up?

Videogamedunkey said when reviewing Star Wars: Battlefront: “once you’ve sunk your teeth into this game, you realize it wasn’t fleshed out and rushed out as fast as possible.” The game released with no single player, one of the best and most original parts of the original Battlefront games, and a meager multiplayer with only four maps. If you wanted any of the other maps, special characters or DLC, you had to shell out extra money to get the Season Pass, which cost an extra 50 bucks. This game crushed my heart, I was Anakin Skywalker screaming in (metaphorical) pain after taking a lava bath. Trying to get Star Wars: Battlefront out before the Rogue One movie didn’t work, fans will always notice when we get an unfinished product.

The guys at EA did seem to listen to some of these complaints and are fixing these glaring problems for the sequel. There’s a full single-player campaign, having adventures in all three main Star Wars time periods. All the future maps and heroes will be given for free for those who bought the game, which is what should have been happening all along. This time, it doesn’t seem like the game’s being rushed and the developers at DICE are taking their time to flesh out a full experience.

Popular YouTubers and content creators on Twitter shared a lot of the same sentiments:

And some, not so much:

I’m optimistic but hesitant for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 . It feels, looks and smells like the game the original Star Wars: Battlefront should have been, but I can’t say for sure until the final copy is in my PlayStation 4. We will know for sure when we get to play as Boba Fett, Droids and Finn on November 17.
