Star Wars Battlefront II and Red Dead Redemption 2 will allegedly run at true-4K resolution on Xbox Scorpio, according to leaked marketing materials obtained by Windows Central. The documents list several first and third-party titles to “exemplify Project Scorpio’s six-teraflop, true-4K capabilities,” and both sequels were mentioned.
What makes this marketing note so particularly interesting is that both franchises have established prior partnerships with PlayStation. The first Star Wars Battlefront was advertised alongside PS4, and it even launched with a limited-edition console. Last October, Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced to “take full advantage of PS4” with timed-exclusive DLC. If both games are marketed with Microsoft in the future, what does that say about those previous deals?
Admittedly, that much is unclear. After all, Battlefront and Red Dead might run at 4K resolution on PS4 Pro as well. The question that remains, however, is if those pixels will be native or upscaled. Even though the source materials mention “true-4K’ on Xbox, that may not even be the case. It all depends how Microsoft chooses to define what “true-4K” means. Remember when Microsoft tried so very hard to convince gamers that Rise Of The Tomb Raider wasn’t eventually coming to PS4 ? Marketers often play games with semantics, so those supposed “true-4K” results may offer more parity than it appears.
Of course, Scorpio might also offer legitimately better image quality too. Rockstar has especially tried to be platform agnostic in recent years, so maybe having one foot in Microsoft's camp is the developer’s way of balancing the scales.
In addition to the headlining two, the full list also features expected names such as Forza Motorsport 7, Crackdown 3, State Of Decay 2, FIFA and Madden. Also, thanks to a feature called “change resilience,” all previous Xbox One games that used dynamic resolution scaling will run at 4K as well. From our perspective, this concept sounds a bit like Boost Mode on PS4 Pro.
Star Wars Battlefront II and Red Dead Redemption 2 are both expected to release this fall alongside Xbox Scorpio.
