The re-release of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow for the virtual console is almost here and fans want to know if there will be any new features since the games are also coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Today, the release of the Japanese version of the virtual manual revealed some details about how the online features will work.
According to Serebii, the online features of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow Versions (and Green Version if you’re in Japan) will indeed do away with the link cable and let trainers battle and trade over the wi-fi. Here’s how Serebii described the online features for Pokémon RBY: “When you go to the Cable Club, a new menu will appear on the touch screen. The first option is to Connect to a Partner, which sends the signal out while the second option is to Search for a Partner, where it will look for connections being requested.”
This online feature will also do away with Restore Points in Pokémon RBY. Every virtual console version comes with a Restore Points function that allows for players to save at any time and load it whenever regardless of any in-game save features or restrictions.
Restore Points are especially useful in older games where saving was not as easy as just pushing START and saving. But with this function comes exploits that allow some savvy players to circumvent the rules.
In the case of Pokémon RBY, using Restore Points can be used to “clone” Pokémon.
Imagine using a Restore Point before going into the Cable Club in RBY where you are forced to save. After you are done battling/trading you can load up the game to before entering the Cable Club and you’ll have your Pokémon still on your team and the person you traded with will have it as well.
This is the likeliest reason for the removal of Restore Points in Pokémon RBY and will actually have trainers catch ‘em all.
