Rumors about the Nintendo NX release date are never-ending these days, but it’s rare that those rumors and hints and teases come from Nintendo itself. Well, today they do, because the company has released the English translation of its latest financial presentation to investors, and, as Nintendolife discovered, it’s chock full of vaguely suggestive teases about the future. Specifically, that the Nintendo NX will be out by the end of the company’s next fiscal year in March 2017.
Nintendo NX Release Date: Nintendo Suggests Release By Next Fiscal Year
Nintendo’s fiscal year ends every March and in a recent briefing about the company’s third quarter fiscal results ending in December, new Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima was asked where future “Nintendo-like” (e.g. large) profits would come from in the next fiscal year. Kimishima explained that the company was investing heavily in its future endeavors—including the Nintendo NX as well as its mobile strategy—and that the arrival of those projects would bring about a return to big earnings. Here’s the key quote: “As I have said before, we will be launching many of our new business activities as we move from this fiscal year into the next.” Remember, Nintendo’s fiscal year ends in March, which means the next fiscal year—the one the Nintendo NX will start delivering results in—hasn’t started yet, and will end in March 2017.
That seems like the strongest evidence we’ve had yet that the Nintendo NX release date will take place in the 2016 holiday season (after all, nobody’s going to launch a console in February!). That also corroborates lots of other rumors, which started in The Wall Street Journal months and months ago. It also means that Nintendo’s new mobile strategy is going to start making itself felt this year. We’ve already seen some inklings of what Nintendo’s doing in the smartphone arena, but that’s just the beginning. The rest is still to come.
It’s not quite official yet that the Nintendo NX will come out this year, but if even Nintendo is making intimations in that regard, it looks pretty darn likely. We should hear official word within a few months, but until then… it’s fair to start getting excited for the Nintendo NX, for its release is in sight.
