Suicide Squad has not hit the theater yet but Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel will be made for the D.C. Comics film starring Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Cara Delevingne. Director David Ayer told The Wrap on Wednesday that he hopes to have a sequel in 2017.
The comic flick tells the story of a team of imprisoned supervillains, recruited for a black ops mission in exchange for their freedom. The ensemble cast includes Leto as the Joker, Robbie as Harley Quinn, Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Delevingne as Enchantress, Ike Barinholtz and Scott Eastwood.
In his interview with The Wrap, Ayer mentioned he hopes to have Smith on board for the sequel, which suggests Deadshot would not be killed off from the comic book movie.
According to Heroic Hollywood, the main villain of the film will not be the Joker. Instead, Delevingne’s character will inspire Waller to create the Suicide Squad. The dangerous supervillain Enchantress intends to resurrect her brother, leading to world destruction.
It was previously confirmed that Ben Affleck will play Batman in a cameo.
"We made him fight," Ayer told USA Today. "He's awesome [as Batman] ... You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”
Suicide Squad will hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
