Have you seen a blue dot next to the usernames of people you follow on Instagram in your search results or search history? This is likely a part of the recent update, which rolled out on the social media platform Wednesday.
While some Instagram feeds may be going black and white in accordance with the update, others are noticing a tiny blue dot to the left of certain usernames when they go to their search history. The dot may also show up next to usernames in search results. The dots appear to be random, but they aren’t.
The Blue Dot Doesn’t Mean Users Are Online
Some Instagram users have suggested the dot indicates when a user is online. But this is not the case. This dot likely means the profile has an image that users have not yet seen. Once profiles with a dot are viewed, users will no longer see the blue dot next to that username in their search history or results.
This feature appears to be specific to iOS devices. None of the several Android smartphones we tested in office had blue dots in their search results. Apple smartphones running the latest version of Instagram, which rolled out Wednesday, did have the blue dots in search results.
The blue dot is likely a follow-up to the unseen post feature Instagram rolled out with an update in April. The update introduced a new notifications system that allowed users to get activity notifications from specific people they followed. However, when accessing Instagram, users would also see a second “unseen post” notification in the app. Many users found this feature more annoying than useful.
What Should I Do If The Blue Dot Won’t Go Away?
At this time the blue dot is not a glitch or bug. It should go away once the accompanying profile is viewed.
Other Blue Dots On Instagram
Those using Instagram on iOS may also see a blue dot appear next to the app icon. This indicates that the app has been updated recently. Once users access Instagram for the first time after the update, this second blue dot should disappear.
