2K released details for its upcoming WWE 2K17 DLC updates. While the game is anticipated with a new Career Mode and improved gameplay, the anticipated WWE 2K17 updates almost turns the title into a new game with the addition of new moves, new wrestlers (or superstars if you’re Vince McMahon) and even more matches added for Showcase Mode. The staggered release of DLC updates (one every month to a month and half) gives WWE 2K17 fans something to look forward to, even if the game begins to go stale.
While new DLC are always anticipated, the choice for additions almost never live up to expectations. From “legendary” wrestlers to Hall of Fame Showcase matches that should not be included, the DLC could also leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Visit the official 2K website for the full list of patch notes and content for the anticipated WWE 2K17 DLCs. Instead, we will only examine three issues with the updates, starting with the wrestlers that are added.
The List Of “Legendary Wrestlers" Are A Joke
The addition of Eddie Guerrero and Sycho Sid is something that many look forward to. Guerrero and his move-set will make your matches exciting and Sid is a monster and probably great to play with. But 2K also chose to add Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, Tatanka and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Really?
Of all the biggest names in WWE history to add to the game and those are the three that are selected? Did 2K randomly pick those names out of a hat? Were Jimmy Del Ray and “Iron” Mike Sharpe not in the conversation? This is one of those things that's always a hit or miss with WWE 2k DLC updates. You have Lex Luger followed by Virgil. There are so many worthy names that could be added to the game, but these three are not those names. And it's okay to repeat legends in games if the fans like those wrestlers.
Some Of The Hall of Fame Matches Aren't The Best Matches
The Hall of Fame Showcase is a series of matches that show some of the best work from the year’s WWE Hall of Fame inductees. The problem is that while some of the matches reflect the great contributions of these men and women, some of the matches just aren’t their best work. The Fabulous Freebirds have a classic match against The Von Erichs in the game, but their second match on the DLC is against Cactus Jack and Diamond Dallas Page from WCW 1992. Was that’s all they could find?
An Ivory vs. Jacqueline match from a random WWE Smackdown from the year 2000? Jacqueline had much better matches. Papa Shango vs. The Godfather in a dream match...what dream is that? How about when The Godfather won the Intercontinental Championship in 1999? More care and research needs to go into these matches, because while these wrestlers are Hall of Famers, some of their matches belong in the Hall of Shame and should not be showcased to the world.
More NXT Stars
After the brand split, many people see NXT as the second best show on WWE TV (Smackdown 1st and Raw a distant 3rd). The NXT Future Stars Pack will feature five additions to your wrestler selection: Austin Aries, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows, Mojo Rawley and Tye Dillinger. Dillinger and Aries will be great addition but are Anderson and Gallows really “future stars”? Is Mojo Rawley even really close to a star?
There are so many more NXT stars 2K could have included. Bobby Roode was only officially in WWE since the summer, but was first seen during WrestleMania weekend – 2K had more than enough time to get him in. What about “Cien” Almas or No Way Jose? Heck, even “The Drifter” Elias Samson could have been thrown in. With the rise of NXT, you would expect more wrestlers from the show. Hopefully this is something 2K could improve on in upcoming WWE DLCs.
WWE 2K17 will be released worldwide on Oct. 11 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. DLC content release dates will be announced on a later date. What are you looking forward to the most in WWE 2K17? Let us know in our comment section.
