Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson called his Nov. 4 film “the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse” during an interview with ComicBook.com last month. While he was clearly referring to the dark, mystical, interdimensional threats scared away from Earth by Dr. Stephen Strange, speculation nonetheless spread like wildfire about whether or not ‘cinematic multiverse’ meant we could see the X-Men eventually team up with The Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy in Infinity War.
Derrickson’s comments would be easier to shrug off if Marvel and Fox hadn’t just made a deal for a new TV series revolving around the X-Men character Legion. Marvel boss Joe Quesada introduced the Legion trailer at San Diego Comic-Con as a “brand new Marvel show.”
As it turns out, ComicBook.com caught up with Infinity War director Joe Russo, who told fans not to get their hopes up.
"As far as we know, right now there isn't talk regarding the X-Men. I don't know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven't heard of any."
The Russo brothers surprised fans by including Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, his first appearance in the MCU. However, his cameo may have just been a one-time coincidence.
"Sony and Marvel had a relationship through Kevin [Feige] and Amy [Pascal] and through us and Amy," Joe Russo explained. "That's really how Spider-Man came about. It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties."
Russo also confirmed there was no talk about including the X-Men in Captain America: Civil War. So there you have it. There’s no chance we’ll see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine alongside Iron Man and Captain America anytime soon. Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy will have to suffice.
Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters May 4, 2018.
