One of the most-anticipated films of 2016 is Marvel Studio’s Captain America: Civil War as the studio brings one of Marvel Comics’ biggest storylines to life. But after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, what can drive Cap and Iron Man to be on opposite sides of a political debate?
Civil War directors, Joe and Anthony Russo -- who were behind the camera for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will be for Avengers: Infinity War -- sat down with comicbook.com before their appearance at New Orleans Comic-Con.
In the interview, the Russos discussed how Civil War begins and how Scarlet Witch fits into it all.
"We like to say that the amount of time that has passed in between films is the amount of time that has passed in the movies," answered Joe Russo. "So, it's about that amount time. We find Cap leading the Avengers. He's tutoring or mentoring Scarlet Witch in the beginning of the movie and bringing her into the fold. We find them on a mission at the start of the film. The effect that Ultron has had on everyone certainly is central to the storytelling of the movie. It's very strong. We're dealing with issues of collateral damage, imperialism, what rights do super heroes have to pursue villains across borders. It's very politically minded. Cap's dealing with all of that at the beginning."
What stands out is the “mission” that Cap, Scarlet Witch and the rest of the New Avengers are on. There have been reports that the incident that started Civil War in the comics will be reimagined for the film.
According to reports, Cap and Scarlet Witch will be looking to apprehend Crossbones. The report says, “the only problem is that Crossbones is wearing a suicide vest full of nasty explosives. In order to protect the civilians on the ground, Captain America orders Scarlet Witch to levitate Crossbones above ground. She does and unfortunately is unable to contain the massive explosion that sets off near a populated building causing death and destruction.”
The reports from Heroic Hollywood seem to be corroborated by the Russos as both Cap and Scarlet Witch are mentioned specifically and are on a mission. And the fact of collateral damage being a main plot point makes a ton of sense with the HH reports.
In the comics, the incident that began the ball rolling in Civil War was when villain Nitro blew himself up in a Connecticut neighborhood when the superhero team, the New Warriors were trying to stop him. There were plenty of civilian deaths which caused the government to enact the Superhero Registration Act.
The Superhero Registration Act will be present in Civil War and the “incident” will likely bring Iron Man to the government’s side.
Captain America: Civil War is set to release May, 6.
