There's a bit of bad news for Doom fans out there as Doom Eternal is pushing back its launch date by a few months. The game was initially slated for release on November 22. With this announcement, it seems that the new release date is officially March 20, 2020.
According to id Software, their goal in developing Doom Eternal has always been to offer something that exceeds expectations across the board. In order to deliver the best experience, while also meeting their own standards, the decision was made to delay the launch. Though this is sure to disappoint many fans, id Software says the development team is confident that the game is going to deliver an experience that is well worth the wait.
In addition to the delay in the release, there are also some other changes coming, especially to the Invasion Mode. This Mode allows a players to join another player's game, but as a demon. While this update is still free, it is going to be released after the game's official launch.
Additional updates related to the different platforms include:
- The Nintendo Switch release of Doom Eternal is going to be made after the other platforms. A Switch release date is set to be announced in the future.
- Doom 64 is going to be available not only for the Switch, but also for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
- Those who pre-order Doom Eternal are going to get Doom 64 as a pre-order bonus. This means they're going to be able to download and play this classic game for free.
- Doom 64 is also scheduled for release on March 20, 2020 to all platforms.
Doom Eternal is the fifth title in the Doom series and serves as a direct sequel to the 2016 Doom. The story follows after the events of the previous game, though it is not mentioned how much time has actually passed. This time around, Earth has been overrun by demonic forces and it is up to the Doom Slayer to rescue the human race.
Like the previous game, Doom Eternal focuses on what is known as "push-forward" combat where players are encouraged to engage enemies aggressively in order to acquire health and ammo. One change is that there is expected to be twice as many demon types compared to the previous game. This includes both new demons and demons from previous Doom games.
