After the release of Dragon Quest VII for the Nintendo 3DS, the next game in the franchise will make its way to the handheld console in January.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will be ported for the Nintendo 3DS, continuing Square Enix and Nintendo’s push to make the Dragon Quest series a household name outside of Japan.
For those unfamiliar with the story of Dragon Quest VIII, a jester named Dhoulmagus comes to Castle Trodain and steals the King’s sceptre. He then uses its power to turn his majesty into a troll, the Princess into a horse and the castle inhabitants into plants. The only one left unscathed from this attack is a castle guard who escaped the curse and must now step up to save the kingdom he’s sworn to protect.
Your character will travel different lands, recruit allies and follow Dhoulmagus to retrieve the King’s sceptre.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King has been streamlined for the Nintendo 3DS. The new Quick-Save function allows players to save and exit the game at any time. And the “Speed Up” feature allows for quick battles.
Players will also be able to pause the game at any time (outside of battles and cutscenes) and take photos using the 3DS of their heroes. You can pose your heroes and use different stickers and filters. This isn’t just some small feature, taking photos can help you on your journey once your player meets Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect. Players will unlock Cameron’s Codex, where they’ll be rewarded for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters and situations.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will release for the Nintendo 3DS Jan. 20.
