When God of War came out last year as a PS4 exclusive, it made one hell of an impact. In 2018. God of War received dozens of awards and nominations from the gaming industry, and even bagged the title of 2018’s Game of the Year. Following the huge success of the franchise, developer SIE Santa Monica Studio has partnered with tabletop games creator CMON to bring Kratos to the more traditional gaming scene in the form of a card game. The God of War card game will be a strategy-oriented turn-based game that features cards with unique artwork and distinct gameplay mechanics. Staying true to God of War’s nordic-inspired lore, CMON has invested plenty of storytelling and world-building to make sure that God of War: The Card Game tells a unique and compelling story around the franchise.
In God of War: The Card Game, players take on the role of the Norns as they stop at nothing to keep Ragnarök at bay. In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is the cataclysmic event that ends all of life as we know it. Through a combination of unique heroes battling against villainous hordes and the strands of fate itself, God of War: The Card Game tells an all-new adventure.
Designed to be played by one to four players, the game lets players choose a character from the God of War roster. There are no details yet, but fans expect to see staples like Kratos, Mimir, Freya, Atreus, and more. The main idea of the game is to have players run their own adventures and choose their own quests based on certain possible scenarios as they face off against the tides of Ragnarök. Apart from the tried-and-true ‘do this quest, get this reward’ system, the God of War card game also features open-ended gameplay where player decisions and quest outcomes ultimately affect their party of adventures and many other aspects of the game.
Because of the importance of player decisions and how each game might tell a different story, we’re excited to see roleplaying possibilities in God of War: The Card Game. With each playthrough offering a unique experience, God of War may be just as much tabletop-RPG as it is a card game.
The hardcore tabletop gaming fans here at Player. One can’t wait to get their hands on God of War: The Card Game, but fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long. The game has been announced for a Q3 2019 release, so we should be seeing it three to five months from now.
