Lucasfilm announced that Donald Glover will be playing Lando Calrissian in the untitled Han Solo A Star Wars Story movie due out in 2018. Glover will play opposite Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo. Presumably the two will indulge their love for the Star Wars galaxy card game, Sabacc.
After the casting of Ehrenreich as Solo a number of other rumors began flying about the cast of the untitled Han Solo movie. But while Glover has long been rumored to be the top pick for the role, it only became official this Friday.
Glover and Ehrenreich will share some early Han Solo adventures under the guidance of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie). Nothing is known about the plot, but the official announced says “the new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.”
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” Lord and Miller said. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Glover’s next big role will be in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, or you can watch him now in his excellent FX series, Atlanta. But you’ve got a long wait to see him wearing Lando’s cape, with both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode 8 between us and the Han Solo movie release date.
