Hearthstone announced that the newest expansion is now live and it marks the start of the Year of the Gryphon. Forged in the Barrens brings to the game 135 new cards along with new memorable characters. You will also encounter the new "Frenzy," Ranked Spells, and even Legendary Mercenary Minions.
In a press statement, Blizzard President J. Allen Brack shared that this latest expansion brings to mind some of the iconic themes and stories of Warcraft . He added that by including the new Core set, there's no better way to start the Year of the Gryphon.
New Features
The newest addition to the game is Frenzy. Minions that have this new keyword activate a rather strong effect the first time that they survive damage. The Warsong Envoy, for example, when Frenzy is triggered, gets a +1 attack for each damaged character.
Ranked Spells, meanwhile, get upgraded when players reach 5 Mana Crystals and 10 Mana Crystals. Each of the 10 classes has access to a new Ranked Spell. Finally, there are the 10 Legendary Mercenary minions, one for each class. Players will know more about them as the Year of the Gryphon progresses.
Twitch Drops
In celebration of the release of this new expansion, Twitch Drops will take place from April 2 to April 4. Simply go to the official Hearthstone Twitch channel and watch for two hours to earn a Forged in the Barrens card pack. Watch for an extra two hours and get another card pack. This is going to be the first time Hearthstone makes use of Twitch Drops since it was updated.
Core & Classic Format
Going live today as well as is the Core set, which replaces the current Basic and Classic sets. It’s a set offering 235 cards with some curated from existing sets while others from newer ones. To effectively adapt to any changes to the main game, the Core set will be updated every year. This should allow all expansions that are released in a given year to develop a solid foundation.
