Swedish-based developer Mojang, who is most known for its smash-hit open-world crafting game Minecraft, has recently celebrated 11 years of existence in the video game industry. With those 11 years, according to them, comes the necessity of reinventing themselves, so comes the unveiling of the company’s new name and logo: Mojang Studios.
The news regarding the name and the logo comes from Mojang Studios’ head of creative communications, Thomas Wilborgh, who shared the news in an announcement on the Minecraft website. “Why would we need a new name and logo in the first place? Well, why not? Humans like to reinvent themselves from time to time, so it’s only right that we extend the same courtesy to a company that’s been around for over a decade. I mean, would you still wear the outfit that perfectly defined your style in 2009?”, Wilborgh said.
This is also the logic behind the logo change, which now consists of a gadget that twists and turns to form the letters of the studio. Wilborgh explained further, saying “Introducing: the Mojangs! These mysterious little gizmos are powered by play. They test and tinker, endlessly explore, and help us discover new corners of the Minecraft universe.”
“Play is at the heart of Mojang Studios,” Wiborgh continued. “It’s the blocky backbone of our games, the core of our development philosophy, and even entangled in our name (which roughly translates to ‘gadget’ in lovely, old-timey Swedish). And now, finally, it’s squarely planted in our new, modular logo.”
Lastly, Mojang Studios’ recent projects (Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth) is proof that the company shows no sign of slowing down. The studio is also established in multiple locations all over the globe, and is planning to venture into feature fillm making, epic live shows, and ideas for new games that may or may not be related to the Minecraft universe.
There is no news yet as to what will be the first title announced under the new Mojang Studios name, but their latest title, Minecraft Dungeons, is set to release on May 26 for the PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
