Pixel Reef has has just released a 50-second teaser trailer for upcoming VR game Paper Beast, showcasing its aesthetics and immersive gameplay. The mysterious VR game comes from the creator of the 1991 platform game Another World.
Initially announced in April, Paper Beast is a planned virtual reality game for the PlayStation VR. Coming from French Indie developer Pixel Reef, Paper Beast is a poetic fusion of VR technology and immersive gameplay experiences. It allows new players to become explorers and discover a blossoming virtual world where the environments and quirky animals have independently evolved from lost code and forgotten data. The game mostly revolves around and follows an unspoken narrative that has players interacting with the fascinating wildlife that adapts its behaviors according to the player’s actions.
“Imagine you are dropped in a virgin land, you walk and you don’t know where to go," Founder at Pixel Reef, Eric Chahi, said in a press statement. "Interactions lead you forward, and in the end, you have a natural view of everything.”
Along with its immersive aesthetics, Paper Beast is also working on spatial audio to fully round out the experience. The original soundtrack comes from British music artist Roly Porter and it highlights everything the colorful and poetic universe has to offer. To top it all off, the Japanese all-girl art punk rock band TsuShiMaMire also took part in creating the aural experience for Paper Beast.
The short teaser showcased some really impressive visuals, to the point that I kind of forgot that this is for the PlayStation VR. It also seems to me that the experience is meant to be one that has more impact with virtual reality, but mad respect for the developers for porting it to non-VR users for them to experience as well.
Paper Beast is due out for the PlayStation VR in late 2019 and PlayStation 4 by 2020. We shouldn’t have to wait much longer for additional news, as select members of the press will be able to get their first hands-on experience with the game behind closed doors at gamescom 2019 in Cologne, Germany, which runs from August 20 to August 24.
