After the Nintendo Switch presentation on Jan. 12 and the hands-on event on Jan. 13, there have been plenty of impressions about the upcoming hybrid console and its games ( we wrote one up, too ) but Business Insider’s report has a tidbit that may be a concern for potential buyers.
In Business Insider’s hands-on impressions, this excerpt has Nintendo fans scratching their heads:
“The Switch isn't going to replace your iPad — it's a dedicated gaming machine to the point where it won't have many multimedia functions at launch, Nintendo's Kit Ellis told me. Don't plan to watch Netflix on the Switch, for instance.”
Past Nintendo consoles like the Wii, Wii U and even Nintendo’s current handheld, the 3DS, have multimedia functions but it seems the hybrid console won’t have access to any of the popular streaming services at launch. However, it leaves the door open for Netflix and other services to be available down the line.
Nintendo has pegged the Switch to be a pure gaming device but leaving out multimedia applications when competitors (and even its own past consoles) have included them seems a bit odd. With a small number of launch titles and no functions outside of gaming, the Switch may be a tough sell for those still on the fence.
The Nintendo Switch, which is priced at $300, will be released on March 3.
So what do you think of the idea that the Switch won’t have Netflix or any other multimedia services at launch? Sound off in the comments section below.
