'Overwatch' Loot Box Drop Rate Change: Was Lunar New Year Event Affected?

Some Overwatch players insist there was a change to the loot box drop rate over the latest Overwatch event, Lunar New Year.

The Lunar New Year event boasted hundreds of new items, including truly beautiful skins and a variety of sprays for players, so it’s no surprise that players who didn’t pay for loot boxes felt they didn’t get enough of the gorgeous new skins everyone coveted. But was there really a change to the loot box drop rate for Overwatch ’s Lunar New Year event?

The answer is unequivocally no, according to game director Jeff Kaplan. Not to put too fine a point on it, in a post on Blizzard’s official forums, Kaplan said:

“The drop rates for Summer Games, Halloween Terror, Winter Wonderland and Year of the Rooster are all the same.”

That means you have only RNGesus to blame. Indeed the RNGods are cruel. Just ask me, sad owner of neither Nutyatta or Kingyatta. Behold my miserable empty hands bereft of my favorite character’s coolest skins, and let the sorrow wash over you.

At least during the Lunar New Year event, one could purchase event loot boxes and get skins they might not have time to play for, unlike the Winter Wonderland event. The Lunar New Year also boasted a cool Capture the Flag mode that’s gone permanently. The Blizzard gods giveth and they taketh away.

In other Overwatch news, fans of the Overwatch ladies have not one, not two, but three adorable Nendoroid figures to look forward to, with more to be added in the near future. Kaplan also teased that the 24th hero to be added to the Overwatch roster was not who everyone thought, meaning no Doomfist. Season 3 of competitive is coming to an end, and Activision is bathing in loot box money.

There’s also major hero reworks, including big changes to Bastion, coming down the pipeline after PTR testing.
