The great console war continues to rage on, as more details about the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio slip out. The latest, coming from an interview with the general manager of Microsoft Studios Publishing, confirms first-party games made during the Scorpio’s lifetime will be in native 4K.
Shannon Loftis, speaking to USA Today, confirmed the news during an interview about the recently released ReCore. "Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," Loftis said about the Scorpio’s boosted graphics.
How does that compare to the PS4 Pro? As of right now, the majority of games will be upscaled to 4K. “ I would say the majority will be upscaled – at least based on the game portfolio I have seen to date,” Andrew House, the CEO at Sony Interactive Entertainment, told Digital Spy.
The most important thing to note here is the wording. Loftis at Microsoft said that all first-party games coming would be in native 4K. She doesn’t mention anything regarding third-party games. With the longer time from announcement to release, Microsoft has also given developers more time to develop in 4K.
House at Sony mentions that as of right now, the games currently available aren’t in native 4K. With a very short time from announcement to release, companies don’t have the opportunity to make games support native 4K. House also didn’t mention if future games would be in native 4K, but emphasized all that mattered is whether gamers see a noticeable difference.
When asked if calling the PS4 Pro “4K Gaming” was a misleading term, House disagreed. “I think that whatever the term is, it's a question of whether people see a demonstrable difference in the game experience or not, rather than the term we use to apply to it,” he said. “I think that's what people are looking for and they'll make their judgement as to whether that's working for them or not.”
So what do you think? Do you care if your games are in native 4K or upscaled? Do you think Sony is being misleading by not having any native 4K games available, or do you agree with House? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
