Lando Calrissian will make his first appearance in the new “Star Wars” canon on “Star Wars Rebels.” Not only will this mark the introduction of the character back into the canonical “Star Wars” stories since the purchase of “Star Wars” by Disney and the subsequent downgrading of the “Star Wars” Expanded Universe, but it will also set a new chronological precedent, introducing us to a younger Lando Calrissian, years before the events of “Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.”
Lando Calrissian won’t be the first guest appearance of a “Star Wars” series regular in the new time period established for “Star Wars Rebels,” but he’s definitely the most mustachioed.
Lando Calrissian on “Star Wars Rebels”
The plot of the new “Star Wars Rebels” episode “Idiot’s Array” introduces us to Lando doing what Lando does best: making outrageous bets. The new episode of “Star Wars Rebels” opens with Lando Calrissian gambling with Ghost crewmember Zed, eventually winning the show’s astromech droid, Chopper. The rest of the new “Star Wars Rebels” episode has Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, and Hera doing their best to get back the droid from lovable “Star Wars” roque, Lando Calrissian.
For a spoiler-filled review, check out MakingStarWars.net, which goes in-depth on the plot and promises one of the best “Star Wars Rebels” episodes yet. “Star Wars Rebels” has done a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, and it seems that “Idiot’s Array” is set to continue the trend.
“Star Wars” Guest Voices on “Star Wars Rebels”
The Lando Calrissian episode of “Star Wars Rebels” has one major ace up its sleeves in capturing the early days of Lando Calrissian: Billy Dee Williams has returned to voice the character! So, while Lando Calrissian won’t be a part of “Star Wars: Episode 7 The Force Awakens” (barring a well-guarded secret cameo), it appears that Disney hasn’t forgotten Lando Calrissian and everything Billy Dee Williams added to the “Star Wars” universe with his performance in “Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars: episode VI Return of the Jedi.”
Lando Calrissian joins R2-D2, C-3PO, and Yoda in “Star Wars Rebels” guest appearances featuring the voices of their original “Star Wars” characters. But no, it does not appear we’ll be seeing Lobot.
The “Star Wars Rebels” episode “Idiot’s Array” airs Jan. 19 on Disney XD.
