We finally have an official launch date for Sword Art Online Last Recollection, coming out this October 6 on PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. This new title offers an alternate story from those in novels and anime.
Sword Art Online Last Recollection serves as the culmination of the alternate storyline which started in 2013 with Sword Art Online Infinity Moment. In both light novels and anime, Kirito and friends were able to log out of Sword Art Online after Heathcliff was defeated. However, for Infinity Moment, a glitch made them stay in the game world. Not only that, individuals from other VRMMORPGs have been sucked to SAO as well.
Sword Art Online Last Recollection is taken from the War of Underworld arc of the original novel and anime series. This one, however, goes to a different turn and deviates from the canon.
Here, the heroes journey to the Underworld where there is an increasing tension between the Human Realm and Dark Territory. If not addressed, this tension could lead to a war between humans and AIs. What the heroes don't know is that all these are part of the final stage called “Alicization Project.” This is a secret experiment being done by humans in the real world to make sure that war happens in the virtual world and in turn, force an AI evolution.

Sword Art Online is set in the near future with the story focusing on Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki as they play across different virtual reality MMORPG worlds. It was first released in 2019 as a light novel with an anime adaptation in 2012. In addition to the main series, there's also been a spin-off anime series and an anime film adaptation.
