Watch Dogs Legion is only two months away from release, and we are still learning about all the new things that the game will have. Creative Director Clint Hocking recently held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit where he revealed that Legion will have a Permadeath mode, which is not the same thing as the typical Permadeath of one character seen in games like Fire Emblem.
Hocking said the Permadeath mode will be an optional setting and will not be related to the difficulty setting. You can play the game on Easy and have Permadeath on. This option will not be related to the permadeath of a single character. If your character were to die while you have the mode on, all of your characters will either be dead, hospitalized, or arrested. There is nothing you can do about it. It will be game over and you will have to restart from the beginning.
“Permadeath is an option in the main game, so you do not have to play with Permadeath on. Either way, you can choose to use one character throughout the game - as long as they are not arrested or hospitalized (or killed),” Hocking said on Reddit. “You can stick with the same character throughout - except for a couple of instances where you might need someone specific.”
You can also turn off the Permadeath mode if you regret it. However, keep in mind that you cannot turn it back on again. Hocking also said that Permadeath mode will only be available for single-player and not the multiplayer. This decision was made because in an online game there is “too much potential for griefing and randomness.” More information about the multiplayer will be revealed soon.
“If you are playing in Permadeath Mode (which is optional) and all of your characters are Dead, or simultaneously Arrested or Hospitalized, and you have none left, the game is over and you will need to restart from the beginning. Permadeath can be turned off (but not back on) in the options menu at any time.” Hocking further added. “Whether you are in Permadeath or not, operatives can be arrested or hospitalized, which takes them out of action for a while, but you can recruit people to reduce that time (such as Doctors or Police Officers who can get your operatives back faster).”
