CD Projekt Red’s best-selling game, The Witcher 3, has broken its sales record again after the launch of The Witcher on Netflix.
“The accumulated revenue from sales of The Witcher 3 on the Steam platform for the period of time between October 1st, 2018 and today has exceeded $50M USD. As a result, we are now getting 80 percent on any subsequent sales of TW3 on Steam.” tweeted CD Projekt Red.
Most developers get 70 percent of their sales through Steam, with the rest going to Valve, but it changes if the game generates more revenue. If a game makes $10 million, the share increases to 75 percent, and increases a further five percent if it hits $50 million, which is where The Witcher 3 is at right now.
Last week it was reported that The Witcher 3 sales were up by 554 percent in December, largely thanks to the launch of The Witcher series on Netflix starring by Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The game also broke 100,000 concurrent players on Steam for the first time at the end of January.
With the number of good reviews and praise The Witcher got on Netflix, the series was confirmed for a second season and they have also greenlit the show for the third season.
Many people were skeptical about the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher, but it turned out to be one of the most viewed shows on Netflix. Henry Cavill played Geralt really well, nailing the soft heart with a heavy exterior act while swinging his swords around killing dozens.
So, what are your thoughts on The Witcher 3’s success? Do you think more games should get the chance to appear on the big screen and show their worth? Personally, I would love to watch a series with an amazing plot and maybe even see a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation after the game comes out.
