Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim's teaser only makes the Arrow’s Season 5 Susan Williams mystery more of a mystery, or maybe not a mystery at all. We either have no idea what’s about to happen, or what we never thought would ever happen, but knew probably should eventually, is going to happen. Either way, it’s certainly going to be a real WTF moment when we find out what Susan Williams is really here for this season.
"I'll just say, based upon what little [fan theories I've seen] ...I try to avoid online, but it's online, so it's impossible to completely avoid stuff. It seems like the general prevailing theories about how we're going to play that subplot off are wrong," Guggenheim told ComicBook.com. "That's kind of my impression. Everyone's expecting something we're not doing, for better or for worse."
Assuming Guggenheim knows his way around Reddit, the strongest running Arrow Season 5 theory is that Susan is connected to Russia somehow--Bratva or Kovar. The bottle of vodka, the photos, and the timing of the Prometheus situation and flashbacks. While producer Wendy Mericle even said, “were we too obvious about that?” when asked about the vodka clue, if Guggenheim’s tease is any indication, these Russia theories may be wrong.
So either he’s got something even crazier and unpredictable up his sleeve--or Susan Williams is just a simple reporter here to push Oliver into having his big Iron Man-style press moment as Mayor. After five seasons, Oliver coming out to Star City as Green Arrow does seem overdue.
